Topic 1:Sharing from Department of Health Technology and Informatics, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Biomedical Big Data Analytics

Synopsis:

Big data becomes the hottest topic in many fields, especially biomedical disciplines. The analysis of big data is challenging because the data is not only large in size but also complex in structural organization. One of the representative big data examples is Electronic Health Record (EHR) database, which provides a digital and structural form of patient records and supports the clinical decision, patient care and patient advice. EHR database is still an under-explored big data resource that has hosted a large number of cases with complete recovery, good prognosis, reliable diagnostic tests and effective treatments. This talk reports and discusses some big data studies led by the speaker. The themes of these studies cover novel EHR search engine, disease-specific imaging probe profiling and effective neuronal connectivity. These EHR-based biomedical applications thoroughly reveal the current trend and new perspective of big data computing and intelligence.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Lawrence Chan, Associate Professor of Department of Health Technology and Informatics, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Dr. Lawrence W.C. Chan received his PhD in Artificial Intelligence in 2001 from the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Chan is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Health Technology and Informatics, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has been appointed as Editorial Board Member, Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence (EAAI); Associate Editor, Frontiers in Non-Coding RNA; and Affiliate member, Hong Kong Society of Medical Informatics (HKSMI). Dr. Chan’s research interest includes bioinformatics, imaging informatics and clinical decision support. Dr. Chan received a number of competitive research grants, including General Research Fund (GRF: PolyU 5118/11E) for his project about EHR Clinical Decision Support System, and Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF 02131026) for his project about targeted therapy resistance in lung cancer.

Applications of Big Data bioinformatics in Molecular Diagnostics

About the Speaker:

Dr Professor Cesar Wong; Associate Professor,The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Dr. Wong is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Technology and Informatics, Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Dr. Wong is also the Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Oncology and the School of Public Health and Primary Care, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is endorsed as the Founding Fellow of the Faculty of Science, The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia due to his continuous contribution in Anatomical and Molecular Pathology. His main research interest is to develop tumor markers for diagnosis, prognosis of Asian common cancers such as colorectal cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer and cervical cancer. He has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and more than 70 abstracts. He has been publishing in many prestigious journals such as Annals of Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research, Oncogene, Biosensors and Bioelectronics, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Pathology and Clinical Chemistry. He succeeded in obtaining a number of competitive Research Grants in Hong Kong including the Hong Kong General Research Fund, Health and Medical Research Fund, Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society Novel Research Grant and he is an editorial board member of 25 peer-reviewed journals. Besides actively involving in molecular detection of tumor markers, Dr. Wong is also appointed as the chief assessor in in-situ hybridization and molecular tests in the National External Quality Assessment Scheme, United Kingdom and a scientific assessor in the Hong Kong Laboratory Accreditation Scheme in Molecular and Anatomical Pathology. Dr. Wong has recently been appointed to be the Director of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University – Huawei Biomedical Big Data Laboratory and the Senior Consultant of the Hong Kong Science Park Incorporation.

Topic 2:

AI - Atlas Intelligent Cloud Hardware Platform for healthcare

Synopsis:

AI offers a number of advantages over traditional analytics and clinical decision-making techniques. Learning algorithms can become more precise and accurate as they interact with training data, allowing humans to gain unprecedented insights into diagnostics, care processes, treatment variability, and patient outcomes. Huawei Atlas designs an intelligent scheduling platform that enables resource disaggregation, unified orchestration and scheduling, and on-demand provisioning, improving resource utilization by over 50%, which all help healthcare toward the path of AI.

About the Speaker:
